Cobalt is a relatively rare element, composing about 0.001% of the Earth's crust. The most important minerals are cobaltite (CoAsS), smaltite (CoAs2 ), and erythrite [Co 3 (AsO 4) 2 .8H 2 O]. Cobalt often occurs in association with nickel, silver, lead, copper, and iron ores.
